up to date miscellany

i just wanted to get everyone up to date on our lives.

first of all, jes has started school. i don't much more than that. i do know that one of her classes goes until 8pm and another goes until 10pm. i think that sucks ass, and i am pretty sure she does too. she does love her new clinic at the volunteer lawyers for the arts or VLA. so that is good. and she has friends in a number of her classes. can you say "study group"?

secondly, we have seen two movies over the last few weeks. we saw "idlewild" in the theater. i really liked it and so did jes. if you haven't seen it, you should. it stars andre 3000 and big boi of outkast (among other folks like terrence howard, ving rhames, macy gray and cicely tyson). the cinematography (did i spell that right?) was outstanding, the choreography was dreamy, and the storyline and characters were surprisingly multi dimensional. the only thing i didn't care for was the violence. it is set in georgia (near atlanta) in the 1930's, so there is this "gangster/mobster" flavor to it and that often means violence. i could have done without that. and the two little boys that play andre 3000 (percival) and big boi (rooster) are so fucking cute, i just wanted to take them home and feed them soup.

the other movie we watched i am less proud of admitting i saw. we got it on netflix and its called "she's the man" with amanda bynes. its a modern day version of shakespeare's "twelfth night." the girl is a great soccer player, her team is cut, so she poses as her brother to play on another school's boys soccer team. here is the thing, its a dumb teenage movie where (thank GOD!) heteronormativity prevails, but there are some funny parts here and there. amanda bynes is pretty hilarious as a dude. she just really overplays it and all the other guys are like "what is your problem?" but then when she "scores" this really hot chick olivia (nothing happens, olivia just likes her-as a boy), they are all like acting just like her. if you want a dumbish movie with a little drag in it, check it out.

ali is back from her long business trip and she came over for dinner the other night and then we all headed over to glennda and kim's for the MTV video awards. we were all very excited about beyonce, justin timberlake and jack black hosting. overall, it was entirely disappointing. i did not know any of the white guy rockers bands that kept winning over and over and beyonce's performance was boring. i did like the dancing that justin timberlake did at the beginning of his performance, but really that was about it. i enjoyed just hanging with our friends much more than watching the show. we also got to do some laundry at their place, which was like whipped cream on a sundae.

yesterday, after fighting with some mechanics over the repairs on jes's car (long story for some other time) jes and i headed to meet Liz and her friend Camille at the MOMA (museum of modern art). we had these free passes that beth baltimore gave us. it was nice. the building itself is lovely b/c it has all these huge windows that let the light in. and i liked the photography the best. it was really crowded b/c i guess the first friday is target free days at the MOMA, so everybody and their brother was there. honestly, the best part was the gift shop. we got a bday present for our friend higgins and a little thank you gift for ali for watching our cats while we were gone.

after the MOMA, we walked around the city a bunch. god new york is really a lovely, lovely city. it was late afternoon so there wasn't that many tourists, which was nice. sometimes we would just stop at a stop light and i would look up at the buildings and just marvel at the architecture. we left Camille at the train and the three of us headed out to williamsburg to try this all vegan restaurant called "food swings." it was ok, but i am not sure i would go back again. i had the "A Trane" which is a soy burger with guacamole, lettuce and tomato. there wasn't much guac on it and the bun was so huge and dry. the fries were good. and i really enjoyed my blue sky grapefruit soda. also, there is no bathroom or sink, so we could not wash our hands before we ate. gross.

after dinner, we headed to the metropolitan for some adult beverages and erotic photo hunt. we met steph, who i like to call "fannie" now, and then a little later our other friend named jessica showed up. three things made me very excited:

1. i chatted with the bartender about between a glass of merlot, a vodka tonic or a dirty martini which would be most cost effective. he suggested the vodka tonic and because i have "moxie" he poured a little olive juice in it and topped it off with a few olives. what a divine drink.

2. the music at the bar was outstanding. they played erasure, jody watley, blondie and a little caja go go. good times.

3. i saw this guy with this really cool tattoo and i asked him who did it and he said scott campbell. this is the guy i was planning to get my left arm tattoed by. he was recommended to me by chris conn, who did my angels and my chest. i wasn't sure if i was really going to go to this guy scott and then after talking to this guy named chuck (with the nice tattoo) i was like "its babyjesus telling me to go to scott." so that is exciting.

jes and the ladies played a few rounds of erotic photo hunt. i think liz, jessica and fannie are really getting good at it. soon we will have a championship erotic photo hunt team. i started getting tired so we started the long trek home on the G and the F. we finally got home to cold and rainy brooklyn and i was in the bed soon after we arrived home.

its still rainy and a bit chilly this morning, so i think today might be the day to reorganize our closet. good times.

yesterday was my friend laura's bday. happy bday laura.
