allright bitches part dos

on sunday, erin and i went to take a tour of the cloisters, a lovely building way up north on manhattan island that used to house nuns i think. it is just blocks from higgins work and home so we met up with her afterwards for a bite to eat. luckily there was a huge renaissance fair going on in the park adjacent to the cloisters so we got to see lots of ladies and knights and such. one guy working at the cloisters was dressed as a unicorn.

here is a picture of the lovely architecture:

i was trying to get artsy with my photos here, you know prove that i can take pictures just as well as jes. here is one of a pretty door:

this is one of my favorite pictures i took. i love the way the shadow falls across erin's face:

this is my other favorite picture i took. so artsy:

on monday erin and i went into the city to meet my friend maria. maria and i went to high school together. she was in new york en route to connecticut for a conference for her work. she sells fit linx work out machinery. so the three of us met up, walked through central park and then headed down to ground zero. after that, the three of us met up with jes at grand central station to get some lunch.

here is a picture of maria and me at central park:

and here is a real cute picture of jes, me and maria. i feel like maria and i look like we are related, do you?

the rest of the week we mostly worked, ate dinner together and kind of chilled. on thursday night, erin went down to the lottery for rush tickets for Avenue Q and she won! Yippee! So I met her at a restaurant/bar, she got a turkey burger, i got a grilled cheese, we shared some fries and headed out to the show. It was hilarious and we were in the front row. I saw the performers sweat and spit and I saw puppets do some nasty things. If you get a chance, I highly recommend it.

In celebraton of Erin finishing her research on Friday we went to Cattyshack and did some kamikaze (spelling?) shots. While Jes and Erin played Ms. Pac Man and Galaga I chatted up the dj named Storm. After that, we introduced Erin to Erotic Photo Hunt. She loved it. At first she got distracted trying to figure out where the models where and why they were laying half naked in the kitchen. I told her the only thing she needed to focus on was what was different in the picture on the left. We stayed out kind of late-so late we had to stop at smiling pizza and get a slice on the way home. After sleeping in, we drove into the city and dropped Erin off at Penn Station. After that we picked up Ali and a bunch of junk food and came home to watch the Ohio State v. Michigan State game. Of course, the buckeyes won. Yippee!

okay, we are watching "Imagine Me and You" and jes is very excited the two ladies are getting together. Piper Perabo does a fake british accent pretty well. i am getting tired, so i will end it there.

happy sunday

allright bitches

i have been getting some grief from some people (who shall remain nameless) about the length of time since my last post, so...

i am back on line
at least for tonight

i know it has been a minute since i wrote but life and work and friends have gotten in the way. so here it goes for the ketchup. :)

for the past week my friend erin has been staying with us. she came to see us, to see the city and to do research for her dissertation at the american museum of natural history. our journey with erin began last friday when jes and i went to penn station to meet her at the amtrak station. she took a train here from chicago. it took over 20 hours. good googely mooglely. so she had to bring this xray machine so she could xray some skulls at the museum. she also had to bring a lead vest so that the radiation would not seep into her cells. needless to say these things, along with one weeks worth of clothes were quite heavy. luckily we only made her schlep these things across the world and back (and up and down lots and lots of subway stairs). all of us were very sweaty and sore by the end of the day from carrying and/or pulling these things around. i convinced myself it counted as a trip to the gym.

so erin was not on new york soil for more than one minute and she had her first celebrity sighting: richard dreyfus.

yeah that's right: mr holland's opus, close encounter of the third kind- you know him. we weren't sure where to wait for erin b/c we had never been to penn station and when we thought we found the right gate we asked around to other folks what train they were waiting for. this nice young man said he was waiting for chicago and then he told us a famous guy just walked by. i looked and realized it was richard dreyfus. how cool is that? it was a team effort celebrity sighting, but one nonetheless. he had all these bags and could not get them up the stairs by himself so he went back into the rich people only lounge and got some help i guess.

the next celebrity sighting was on monday afternoon when erin accompanied me into the city to meet my high school friend maria. as we walked toward central park passed fancy restaurants, erin spotted uli from project runway:

i wouldn't have known who she was if she had a shirt on that said "i am uli" but when erin explained she was from project runway i had a vague sense of seeing her when i watched the show once or twice at glennda and kim's. i was impressed by erin's celebrity spidey sense, but what really put me over the edge was when she spotted alan rickman in soho on a busy shopping day. yeah, you got it, she picked out none other than snape from harry potter among six zillion consumers in soho:

she said he was carrying a dean and deluca shopping bag. erin really gained my respect on this one. i knew i was working with a top notch celebrity spotter. and on her *first* trip to nyc. very very impressive.

ok so lets move on to what we did while she was here.

on saturday jes, erin and i went to take a tour of the united nations. it was really amazing. not only do you get to see all aspects of the building, you also get to really learn what the UN does. i think both erin and i realized we want to work for the UN. I am pretty sure it will never happen to me because I only speak English and a little Spanish, but I am going to look into it just for shits and giggles. So here is a picture of the security council room (i think):

when you start the tour, they give you these very official looking badges. here is a pic of erin, with her badge, in the securities room:

what i learned most on this tour is that i know next to nothing about the United Nations and what they do. they have this one program called the millenium development goals. its like seven or eight goals that every country in the UN has agreed to work toward achieving. this is the program i would want to work for.

i forgot the name of this room, but it is where they filmed many scenes from the movie "The Interpreter" with Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. Jes can't remember the name of the room either.

here is a pic of jes and me with our badges:

here is one of two cuties and a big gold globe:

and i like to call this one "stop the violence and oh my god donna has a big pumpkin head":

ok we are leaving the library, so i will write more when i get home.
stay tuned....

lesbo love and my bday

ok yall, i am ready for my next post. i am rocking out to the soundtrack to dave chapelle's block party- higgins got it for me for my bday-YIPPEE!

so i can't believe its already been a week, but last weekend we headed to atlanta for our friends wedding. angie and elin were not only getting married, they were also celebrating their TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY of their relationship. how amazing is that yall? so we got to atlanta on friday afternoon and dawn and bailey picked us up. they took us to ragorama to sell some clothes-you know the ones that were REJECTED at the used clothing place in north park slope? yeah, so we sold back $200 worth of stuff, which meant if we wanted store credit, we would have had $100 in credit, but since we wanted cash, we got about $71-that ended up paying for most of our food for the whole weekend. HOLLA. if you are in atlanta, you need to go there, its in little five points. the folks are so nice and you can get some good stuff there. enough said.

on friday night we had dinner wtih nikki and christina at el myr. we had not seen them in a while and nikki has been dealing with some family shit, so we wanted to connect with them. they told us about this cruise they went on and the completely bonkers lesbo couple they met there. their stories were hilarious. then we met up with sarah and kim at the gravity. luckily we got to see sweet ashley this HAWT server that pretty much hates me, but thats ok, b/c she pretty. then we went home and begun to get caught up on the best show ever- WEEDS. i can't believe the crap that has happened on that show. if you don't watch it, you should. it's great.

on saturday we got taqueria del sol for lunch and then watched more weeds and then got ready for the wedding. everyone looked so beautiful. that is one thing i really love about weddings: you get to see your regular friends get all gussied up. ok so here is a picture of all my people:

and i like to call this one "gator and his bitches":

so angie (one of folks getting married) has three gorgeous nieces and of course b/c i am an ass, i have forgotten their names, but maybe elin will post their names in the comments section after she reads this. anywho, they were like bubble girls instead of flower girls and each one looked like a precious princess. check them out:

now i have been to a couple lesbo/gay weddings and i think the hardest part is when parents of the folks getting married won't come because they don't approve or whatever. what was absolutely lovely is that both angie and elin were walked down the aisle by their folks. that part almost made me cry. so here is angie and familia:

and here is elin and familia:

i think there is something magical about seeing where your friends come from. as much as parents make me nervous b/c i am always afraid i am going to say the wrong thing and offend them, i really like to just look at the moms and dads of my friends to try and figure out who they look like and stuff. so the ceremony was lovely-it was outside in the sunshine and because i am a total sap, i cried when they exchanged rings. now i am not sure if this is b/c i am programmed to cry at weddings or what. i like to think that it is because i am witnessing real love and commitment and i think that is powerful. so yeah, i cried. luckily i had a bunch of kleenex b/c my nose was running so i just dabbed my eyes and no mascara ran.

so after the ceremony we just chilled and drank and ate some delicious cheese. this walking stick bug jumped into both jes and gator's hair. clearly he wanted to hang with us, so i took a picture of him:

ok then the brides went around and chatted folks up. here is a picture of the lovelies:

and here are their pretty rings and pretty fingernails:

so we all moved inside and had some DELISH food. all i remember is the pasta and the spicy like pita chips and hummus. i am sure i had other stuff, but i can't remember it now. once everyone finished eating it was time to get our freak on. i *think* the first song was michael jackson, so, of course, i was on the dance floor. here is a pic of angie, elin and one of the nieces. so CUTE:

and here is one of kim rocking out with the little girls. she and i danced with them. they were so darling and so willing to just dance with anyone. no meltdowns or anything. they had to be exhausted, but they really took it in stride. great kids.

so we danced and danced and danced some more and then we headed out. it was a really beautiful wedding, i am so glad that jes and i flew back to atlanta to attend. after the wedding we went over to this friend of sarah and kim's named scott. they know him from mississippi and he is a lawyer. he lives in this RIDICULOUS condo in midtown. its like this huge hi rise and when he gets into the elevator and punches in his code it brings up the news he wants to see and plays the music he has programmed in. it also tells him if he has a package to pick up at the front desk. i was already overwhelmed with the luxury of the building and then i saw his place. really really nice.he has this deck or porch that is HUGE and you the view was sick. i mean i sort of felt like i was in a movie. everyone else there was from mississippi too. krista and john sang happy birthday to me (after midnight) and then some supplemental song from howdy doody. it was wonderful. and their other friend (i forget her name) talked about spray tanning ladies no no special places, and the owner of the place, scott, talked to jes and i about being from iowa and mississippi and about region and culture and what not. he was very charming.

from there we headed home and hit the hay. we were all exhausted. on sunday morning, we went to ria's for a bday breakfast. soo good. i got soysage and potatoes and jes and i shared some biscuits and gravy. sarah got BRISKET and kim got the omelette of the day. then they took us to the airport. now we were supposed to leave out at 2pm but our flight was overbooked so they asked for volunteers. we volunteered our seats and got $200 flight vouchers AND she booked us on the 3:30 flight in FIRST CLASS SEATS. now jes has never been in first class (i have only once on standby). it was GREAT. jes got a free mojito and i got a free vodka tonic. they gave us a "snack" (read a sandwich, fruit and brownie) and the seats were large and luxurious. here is a pic of my sugar living large:

after we got home, we headed up to north slope to meet up with glennda, kim and ali and got some ICE CREAM. i got a nice scoop of coffee. it was divine.

i have had other birthday adventures: jes took me to the color purple the musical and we had a lovely dinner before that and then last night i had dinner with higgins and bobby but it was cut short by me having to leave b/c i thought i was going to hurl. GOOD TIMES. anywho, more on that later. tonight i am having dinner with the ladies. they are making it for me. nice.

emalee is in the house

back up on the horse

so i have a good excuse for not posting for the last couple of weeks.
first of all, my sister, brother in law and nephew came for a couple days, so i was busy playing host.
then i was busy recovering from the cold that my nephew gave me
then i was busy going to atlanta for my friends angie & elin's wedding.
then i was busy celebrating my 33rd bday. i am now the age jesus was when he was crucified.
not sure what that means for me, but i am going to take it as a sign of all the good things to come.

so i am tired (still trying to kick the cold) so this post will only address my family visiting.
they got here on wednesday night and we basically headed up to two boots for dinner and then came home.
ben had some difficulty getting used to sleeping at our house. kath had got him this totally cool "over the hedge" twin sized blow up mattress, but he wasn't really having it, so kath and greg took turns sleeping with ben on the bed while the other slept on the air mattress.

on thursday it was raining cats and dogs, so we hopped on the subway to head to the american museum of natural history to see the dinosaurs. here is a pic of their first trip on the subway:

now they look happy here before it was the beginning of our journey to the museum. being the stellar navigator i am, we ended up just outside of the bronx. FINALLY i got us to the musuem at about 3:30 (only thirty minutes late) to find out that the dinosaur exhibits were all closed for a private party. i felt like such an ass. so we just stopped somewhere so they could get a bite to eat and then we headed back to our house hung out and got hot diggity dog for dinner.

the next day we tried again, and i followed the directions this time and we made it to the musuem right about lunchtime. we had lunch and then headed up to see the dinosaurs. ben really liked them and he loved the toy snake and lizard that kath got him. here is a pic of jes and i and some dinosaur bones:

and here is a picture of kath and ben at the museum:

after we looked at the dinos, we saw some animal diaramas and then we went to this cool presentation on the big bang theory and the solar system. greg really liked that. after the musuem, kath, greg, ben and i headed to visit ground zero and then we headed home for some rest time. on friday night we all had dinner with jes's folks and their friends martin and helen. we went to an italian restaurant on the corner that jes's folks love. it was great to see jes's folks with their friends and to hear about their trip up and down the east coast. i had a delicious tilapia dish and we all shared various desserts- all of which were divine. we got home after that and hit the hay b/c kath, greg and i were headed to pennsylvania on saturday morning for a wedding.

the trip to pennsylvania was okay except ben threw up. i think it was a mixture of post nasal drip and car sickness. it was really scary b/c i didn't know how to help him or make him feel better, but once we pulled over, got some new clothes on him and cleaned off the car seat, he seemed much better. by the time we got the hotel, he seemed completely fine. they all got ready and headed to the church. looked how nice they look:

i am not sure if you can see, but there are dinosaurs on ben's tie. adorable. after the church wedding, they brought ben back to the hotel and we hung out while they went back to the reception. my time with ben was great. we went to the store, then we came back and played, looked out the window at the highway and the trains going by, then it was dinner, bathtime and then we watched some baby einstein. ben wasn't ready to go to sleep yet so we just laid in my big comfy bed and chatted:

here ben said two things that made my heart melt. first, he snuggled up next to me and said "you're my best friend." i almost started crying. then, when i let my hair down he said "you look like my mommy." i reminded him that kath and i are sisters and therefore we look a like. he just kept telling me that i looked like his mommy and giggled. soon kath and greg came home from the wedding and took over in putting ben to sleep in their room.

after a wonderful nights sleep in my big comfy bed, i got up and finished reading "to kill a mockingbird" (a very good book) and then got ready for our big day at sesame place. yeah, you got that right, an amusement park dedicated to the sesame street gang. it was about thirty minutes from where our hotel was. talk about good luck. so we arrived at the park at about 11am. it was a clear, warm sunny day. perfect for elmo, cookie monster and bert and ernie.

here is a pic of the whole family at sesame place:

even the plants are sesame street like:

so this place is amazing. its part amusement park, part water park and you can see bert and ernie and oscar just walking around. they have a street like sesame street and a parade every day at 3pm. i think everyone had a really good time. there was this huge play structure that was all ropes and you could climb and climb and climb. it was so much fun. i tried it and kept falling down and laughing. here is a pic of kath and ben on the ropes:

on our way out of the park, we got to see the count. luckily, we got to see the count and when i took a picture, he even gave us a little flourish of his cape:

when we got back to brooklyn we met up with jes at prospect park where ben played for a little while. then we got some sushi and that food and watched madagascar. the next morning jes went to school and we hung out here until they had to leave for the airport. i think a good time was had by all. most importantly- at the beginning of their trip, ben said jes was his favorite, by the end, i was. you know it.

ok, must sleep soon. more later.

coney island with higgins

jes and i had a wonderful day yesterday. we got up and had some bagels from terrace bagels: DELISH.

then we headed into the city. jes had a meeting at VLA (her clinic for the semester) and I accompanied her to look for a bday present for my best friend mary. when i failed to find what i was looking for, i headed to central park to read The Nation and to write a letter to my friend ara. it was a gorgeous warm sunny day and a very peppy labor day parade was going down 5th Ave. I heard drums, bagpipes and marching bands.

after we finished in the city, jes and i came home and took a quick nap (the city exhausts me and i don't know why) and then got up and ready for higgins to get here. when she arrived, we hopped in the car and drove down to coney island. higgs had never been there, so we were excited to show her the sights. on our way down we discussed roller coasters. at coney island there is an amusement park called astroland. its real old and hella seedy, but they have a roller coaster called the cyclone. word on the street is that disney bought all the lake front property and they are going to tear it all down and put up princess pirate hell, so we really wanted to get on the cyclone before it became fire wood. higgs said she is not to crazy about roller coasters, so we told her she didn't have to go if she didn't want.

now the cyclone is a really small looking wooden coaster and to me, it looked like it didn't go very fast. sort of like the wizard at six flaggs in gurnee, illinois. more like a primer for the real coasters. higgs, being the fucking champ she is, decided she could do it. here is a pic of her and jes in front of the coaster:

here they are making sure they are tall enough for the ride. thank heavens, they are:

so about the coaster: i lied. in fact the drop is fairly severe, it goes fast as fuck and it really throws you around. jes has the bruise to show for it. i sat by myself and jes and higgs sat together. they were both fairly unhappy during most of the ride. i laughed until i cried the entire time. part out of the fun i was having, and part out of fear that higgs was going to beat my ass when the ride was over. she in fact, did NOT beat my ass, but she was a bit wrecked by the ride. here are the cuties immediately after:

luckily, they find found the way out:

after the coaster, we walked up and down the boardwalk. it was such a lovely night and there was this gathering of folks dancing to some really great salsa music. it made me happy that i live in new york. here is a pic of all of us and the ocean:

as we walking off the boardwalk, we came upon this loveliness:

the announcer guy kept yelling "shoot the freak! hit a real live human target!" i had to see what they deemed as a "freak."
all i can say is i wish i had abs like that "freak":

after coney island, we headed to fort greene (i love that neighborhood) to a restaurant called RICE. yall that is some good food. we got some super salty edamame to start out with and shared a divine bottle of red wine. for dinner jes and i shared some black rice, arepas and veggie dumplings. we all shared some tofu meatballs with black rice, and higgs got tofu satay. it was SO GOOD. the ambiance was divine and they played old school michael jackson, outkast and shakira. we were rocking!

after that, higgs hopped on the train and we came home and watched a few episodes of weeds. i love that show.

today we cleaned the house a bunch. and we went through a bunch of our clothes and got rid of a bunch of stuff, namely, jes decided to get SIX PAIRS OF SHOES. yes, dear reader, read that again: JES DECIDED TO GET RID OF SIX PAIRS OF SHOES. i mean its almost like i don't know who she is anymore- but i LIKE IT.

tonight we are having dinner at glennda and kim's and we will get to love on bambino. ali might come too. yippee.

my workspace

rather than actually doing any work, i thought i would post about my workspace.
i just got a new piece for my "altar" (which is really stuff nailed to the wall) but whatevs, you get the idea.
i took pictures of most of the stuff on my wall that is right next to the desk that i spend 70% of my life at.
i thought maybe you all would want to see it.

first up, is my new piece called "guadaliberty." i bought it an hour ago from this artist, miguel ayuso (his email is: chavitero@yahoo.com if you want to look at any of his stuff. its good shit). anywho it is a merging of the statue of liberty and the virgen de guadalupe. i love it. for me, it merges two major icons of san francisco and new york. i was first introduced to images of the virgen de guadalupe in sf when living in the mission district, an area that used to be entirely latino (that, of course, has changed). and then lady liberty obviously represents for nyc. but why she is extra special to me is that, on a clear day, when i am walking around my neighborhood, i can see her. it creates this sense of wonder in me, that this thing i have seen on television and in movies and in books all my life is now visible from my neighborhood. anywho here is a few pictures of the tin ornament:

next is a picture of a stone plaque that alyson and nicole got me some time ago. it is a quote from gandhi:

this was one of those presents you don't ask for, but when you get it you are like "oooh, i love it."

next is a postcard i got from this guy who worked at our favorite bodega in france near pony's apartment:

and here is a picture of the angel carved from wood that i got in some little shop in sante fe, new mexico when jes and i took our road trip out west (stopping in las vegas for nwsa):

along with images or art work from around the united states, i also have sayings that have meaning to me (and my work) posted up. they are not as fancy or pretty as the other images, but they are just as important to me. here are a few:

Lastly, I have pictures that inspire me and/or remind me of why I am doing what I do, and frankly, remind me how many blessings I have in my life in having the friends I have. First up, is a picture of Jes with little baby Bailey on Dawn and Gator's front porch swing. One day Dawn and I went to the coffee shop or U Joint with Sarah to talk about dissertation stuff while Jes stayed at Dawn's house with Bailey. When we pulled up, this is what I saw. I didn't think I could love Jes anymore than I already did, and then I saw her with this baby boy on her chest and I melted:

and here is one of me (but you can't see me and that is fine) and ro ro doing yoga at aly and nik's old house. she is about to go into upward dog, but can't complete the pose b/c of the chocolate chip cookie in her hand. priceless!

and here is a cute one of me and jes making out three hundred years ago:

here is a pic of dawn, sarah and me from a hundred years ago when i was much thinner:

and lastly, and certainly not leastly, is a pic of my chicago family, outside of le peep, of course:

so now you all know, when i am feeling blue, or having writers block, this is what i look to for inspiration.

while uploading this pictures, i just had my lunch, which was DIVINE. left over italian wedding soup i made last weekend. seriously yall, the shit is GOOD. and one last thing. i am reading one of my old Nation magazines right now and its all about the food we eat and how it impacts the environment and public health and all. if you have a chance, check out their website to read the articles. very, very eye opening.

ok yall. have a great weekend.
